At 9:13 pm on October
21st, Astoria Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 121 W.
Marine Drive. Fire personnel arrived on scene at 9:17 pm to find a one story
building with fire venting from windows on the SW corner of the building. The
fire was brought under control at 9:32 pm and crews stayed on scene until 11:25
pm to overhaul the fire area and secure the scene. The cause of the fire is
currently under investigation. The Clatsop County Fire Investigation Team will
be called in to help with the fire investigation.
Damage is estimated at $20,000 to
the structure and $12,000 to the contents, the building is owned by the
Astoria/Warrenton Chamber of Commerce.
As part of an automatic aid
protocol, crews from Lewis & Clark Fire District and Olney-Walluski Fire
District were included in the initial dispatch. The fire was upgraded to a
“Working Fire” providing additional resources from Warrenton Fire Department.
Twenty-three fire personnel, five engines, two command vehicles, and Community
Emergency Response Team members were on scene during this event. Medix
ambulance was also on-scene to provide medical assistances and the Astoria
Police Department assisted with traffic control and securing the area.
Astoria Fire Department would
like to remind everyone to check their smoke detectors monthly. Smoke detectors
can alert the occupants of a fire, but fire sprinkler systems can extinguish a
fire. Fire Sprinkler systems provide a protection of investments, irreplaceable
items, and may lower insurance rates.
