On October 26, 2013, John Andreas Owens, 44 from Independence Oregon,
was taken into custody and charged with the burglary in the first degree in
connection with the burglary of McKeown’s Restaurant that occurred on October
18, 2013. Owen had been a suspect in the McKeown’s burglary as well as a
number of other commercial burglaries between Warrenton & Seaside.
Through physical evidence linking Owens directly to the
scene of the McKeown’s burglary, investigators were able to negotiate an
interview with Owens through his attorney. During that interview, Owen
confessed to being responsible for a number of commercial burglaries over the past
couple months in Warrenton, Gearhart, and Seaside. Those burglaries included Mckeown’s,
Toys R Us, Pops ice-cream in Gearhart, Dairy Queen in Gearhart, Dairy Queen in
Warrenton, and an unidentified business in Rockaway. Also during the interview,
Owens admitted to breaking into Seaside Golf Course & the Candy Man store
solving some cold cases from 2009.
Seaside Police continue to work on the commercial burglaries
of the Freedom Store and Tom and Larry’s Candies. If anyone has information
related to either of those unsolved cases, or any other crime information, they
are encouraged to contact Detective Sergeant Steve Barnett by phone at
503-738-6311 or by email at sbarnett@cityofseaside.us.
