NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE WARNS OF COLD AIR, HEAVY PRECIP COMING

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE WARNS OF TRICKY TRAVEL OVER THE CASCADE PASSES SUNDAY NIGHT FOLLOWED BY VERY COLD AIR MUCH OF NEXT WEEK...
THOSE TRAVELING HOME FROM THE HOLIDAY WEEKEND MAY WANT TO CONSIDER TRAVEL BY TOMORROW (SATURDAY)...AS WEATHER IS EXPECTED TO RAPIDLY DETERIORATE ACROSS THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST SUNDAY.

A SIGNIFICANT CHANGE IN THE WEATHER PATTERN IS EXPECTED SUNDAY AS A VERY STRONG COLD FRONT MOVES INTO THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST. THIS SYSTEM WILL BRING SNOW TO THE CASCADE PASSES...WITH PLENTY OF RAIN EXPECTED FOR THE LOWLANDS.

HEAVY RAIN IS EXPECTED TO CHANGE TO SNOW IN THE CASCADES SUNDAY EVENING...POTENTIALLY CAUSING SEVERAL INCHES OF SNOW TO ACCUMULATE ON THE CASCADE PASSES SUNDAY EVENING. HEAVIER SNOW IS EXPECTED SUNDAY OVERNIGHT.

CONFIDENCE HAS INCREASED THAT SNOW WILL GENERALLY BE CONFINED ABOVE PASS LEVEL SUNDAY AFTERNOON/

BEHIND THIS COLD FRONT...VERY COLD AIR SOURCED FROM THE ARCTIC WILL MOVE INTO THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST. SNOW LEVELS WILL LOWER DRAMATICALLY WITH THE FRONT LATE SUNDAY NIGHT

A SECONDARY SYSTEM MAY PROVIDE ADDITIONAL MOISTURE MONDAY... POTENTIALLY BRINGING MIXED RAIN AND SNOW TO THE LOWEST ELEVATIONS DURING MONDAY EVENING COMMUTE.

THE DETAILS REGARDING THIS SECONDARY SYSTEM ARE STILL HIGHLY UNCERTAIN.
EVEN COLDER AIR IS EXPECTED TO MOVE INTO THE REGION BEHIND THIS SECOND SYSTEM...LIKELY THE COLDEST SINCE NOVEMBER 2010 OR POSSIBLY LONGER.
WIND CHILLS IN THE SINGLE DIGITS ARE POSSIBLE FOR THE PORTLAND METRO AREA BY MIDWEEK. WITH RECORD LOW TEMPERATURES IN THE LOWLANDS GENERALLY IN THE LOWER TO MID 20S NEXT WEEK...

IT IS FAIRLY SAFE TO SAY SOME RECORDS WILL FALL.

CONFIDENCE IS HIGH THAT WINTRY WEATHER WILL AFFECT SOUTHWEST WASHINGTON AND NORTHWEST OREGON NEXT WEEK...THOUGH THE FINER DETAILS REMAIN UNCERTAIN.
