The Oregon Department of Transportation is holding a public meeting on Thursday, March 21 to present information on the planned painting and maintenance repairs scheduled in 2014 for the Old Youngs Bay and Lewis and Clark River Bridges. The meeting is set for 5 to 7 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Express, 204 Marine Drive in Astoria.
During the meeting, project team members will: review the proposed painting and repairs; discuss the scope of the work; possible closure duration options; and the benefits of the repairs. The public will have the opportunity to provide input and comments during the meeting.
The two historic bridges are more than 85 years old and are in significant need of renovation and repair. Some of the key elements of the bridges that need repair include: the wood substructures which have deteriorated; the steel central lift spans that are corroded and rusty; and upgrading of the electrical and mechanical systems to meet the operational and safety needs for marine and highway use. The repair project should extend the useful lives of the bridges for at least 20 years.
The project bids are likely to open in fall of this year with work beginning in 2014. The bridges were constructed in the 1920’s and are two of the few remaining single and double leaf bascule draw bridges in Oregon. The estimated cost of the project is $19 million.
