The Clatsop County Board of Commissioners on Wednesday, April 8 honored Volunteer of the Year recipients and recognized the more than 600 citizens who donate their time to the county. The board approved a proclamation declaring April 12-18 to be Volunteer Week in Clatsop County. In 2014, 631 volunteers provided a total of 22,619 hours of service to the county, representing a value of $482,921. Individual Volunteer of the Year is Shannon Danen, who was honored for his 19 years of work with the Clatsop County Sheriff's Office Underwater Recovery Team. Currently Team Leader, Danen has led multiple recovery missions, and his knowledge and experience allows the Sheriff's Office to provide closure to families of individuals who have died in tragic accidents. Danen was nominated for the award by Sheriff's Deputy Chance Moore. Outstanding Advisory Board Member is Myrna Patrick, a member of the county's Board of Property Tax Appeals (BoPTA). Patrick, who has served on and chaired the board since 2012, spends considerable time each year keeping current on the complex principles and practices required by the Oregon Department of Revenue for participation on the panel, which hears local property owners' appeals of tax assessments. Patrick was nominated by Catherine Harper, Assessment and Taxation Senior Appraiser. Outstanding Volunteer Group is the Clatsop County Animal Shelter volunteers, who perform a wide range of services at the shelter facility in Warrenton, including walking and grooming dogs, feeding and socializing cats, transporting animals for vet treatments, serving as foster owners and cleaning the facilities. Volunteers who received awards Wednesday were Amanda Burgard, Marcy Dunning, Linda Dygert, Rodney Merrill, Christina Merten, Isabelle Toliver and Jerri Yamasaki. The volunteers were nominated by Animal Control Supervisor Stephen Hildreth. Outstanding Individuals within a Group: Mark Tanguay, Jail Ministry, Clatsop County Sheriff's Office. Nominated by Senior Deputy Dave Hillard. Tom Tussing, Reserve Deputy, Clatsop County Sheriff's Office. Nominated by Sgt. Dean Schroeder. Kayla Warner, Worksite Wellness Program. Nominated by Public Health Director Brian Mahoney.
