An urgent project to replace a failed
culvert beneath OR 202 (Nehalem Hwy.), approximately seven miles north of Jewell
(MP 22.275), will result in the closure of the highway to through traffic near
Tidewater Summit.
Beginning at 7 a.m. Monday, December 16 and
continuing until 5 p.m., Tuesday, December 17, the highway will be closed.
Local OR 202 traffic can access residences to
the north and south of the closure, but through traffic will have to use US
30-to-OR 47 or US 26-to-US 101 as alternate routes.
During construction, a contractor for ODOT
will excavate the roadway and place a new culvert. The existing combination
concrete and failed metal culvert will be sealed with concrete. A new, temporary
road surface made of asphalt grindings will be constructed. When the weather is
more cooperative, the roadway will be permanently paved with new asphalt.
Due to the depth of the excavation, it is
impossible to keep one lane open during construction.
ODOT is placing electronic message boards to
alert motorists to the closure. In addition ODOT is working with local schools,
businesses and emergency responders so that alternative travel plans can be
made.
