Five people were seriously injured Sunday morning in a two-vehicle head-on
traffic crash on Highway 26 about eight miles east of Highway 101 in Clatsop
County. Oregon State Police (OSP) is continuing the investigation.
Preliminary investigation indicates on July 21, 2013 at approximately 9:15
a.m., a 1990 Subaru Legacy four-door driven by SAMUEL M. KITTO, age 19, from
Astoria, was westbound on Highway 26 near milepost 8. For an unconfirmed reason,
the Subaru traveled across the centerline where an approaching eastbound 2006
Toyota Corolla driven by KAREN E. ANDERSON, age 27, from Eugene, took evasive
action to the right. Both vehicles collided head-on near the eastbound lane fog
line.
ANDERSON received minor injuries. Her passenger, AUDREY ZIEBELMAN, age 56,
residence not available, received serious injuries. Both were transported to
Columbia Memorial Hospital in Astoria. They were using safety restraints and
airbags that deployed.
KITTO received serious injuries. He was initially transported to Columbia
Memorial Hospital and then transferred to Legacy Emanuel Medical
Center.
Three passengers in the Subaru were also seriously injured. They are
identified as right front passenger JACOB ENGBRETSON, age 19; rear seat
passenger DYLAN R. RABELL, age 19; and, 16-year old juvenile female passenger
whose name is not available. The passengers were taken directly or transferred
to Portland-area hospitals. Their city of residences is not available at this
time. Safety restraint use is pending confirmation.
OSP troopers from the Astoria Area Command office are continuing the
investigation. Trooper Jessie Spurlock is the lead investigator.
OSP was assisted at the scene by Clatsop County Sheriff's Office, Hamlet
Volunteer Fire Department, and ODOT.
