At about 7:22 PM Sheriff's Deputies and Cannon Beach Fire responded to a
report of a 16 year-old paraglider who had been caught by strong winds and blown
inland to an unknown location. The youth was able to describe some visual
reference points and a Sheriff's Office patrol vehicle's overhead lights in the
distance prior to his cell phone battery depleting. The search area was
established and the SAR team was activated. With assistance from the youth's
family, SAR searched the area of Necanicum Mainline and Klootchie Creek, on the
Lewis and Clark Tree Farm, operated by the Campbell Group. Shortly before 3:00
AM, the youth was located on the Clatsop Fir Rd. by his family and friends. He
was in good condition and spirits.
The Sheriff's Office SAR program is comprised of three elements, Ground
SAR, High Angle Rescue and Under Water Recovery. The teams are comprised of
unpaid professionals, volunteering their time to provide enhanced responses to a
variety of missions. These missions can include injured or lost hikers,
hunters, evidence searches, cliff rescues and dive responses. The Sheriff's
Office is currently accepting applications for the ground Search and Rescue
Team. Interested persons can pick up an application at the Sheriff's Office.
